A wildfire in Yosemite National Park that has burned more than 5,500 acres was caused by an abandoned campfire, officials confirmed. The Dome Fire was first reported on the morning of September 15 near the park’s southern entrance, approximately a quarter-mile north of Chilnualna Falls. As of Wednesday, the fire was 39% contained, according to the federal wildfire incident management system Inciweb.

Authorities identified the blaze’s origin as human-caused, specifically linked to an unattended campfire. Park officials have urged anyone with additional information to contact the National Park Service tip line. While investigators have indicated that federal charges could be filed against those responsible, no formal accusations have been announced.

The fire gained national attention after a tragic helicopter crash on September 20 claimed the lives of two aerial firefighters engaged in suppression efforts. Ryan Cutter and Greg King, both experienced pilots, died when their aircraft went down while conducting water drops over the Dome Fire. Family members publicly mourned their loss.

Cutter’s wife, Nina Pacchia, described her husband as adventurous and calm under pressure, highlighting his ability to provide comfort amid demanding circumstances. King, a contract helicopter pilot based in Palmer, Alaska, was known within the firefighting community for his skill and dedication. Andy Jones, chief of aviation for the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection, praised King for his commitment to safely protecting firefighters and infrastructure both in Alaska and beyond.

Despite the ongoing fire, Yosemite National Park remains open with certain restrictions. Glacier Point Road is closed due to smoke, though it will reopen once conditions improve. Popular hiking trails such as the Four Mile Trail and Panorama Trail remain accessible, while the Chilnualna Falls trail leading toward Buena Vista and Crescent Lakes, as well as the Ostrander Trail and surrounding paths, have been closed because of fire activity.

Fire managers report the Dome Fire continues to spread northward and northeastward but do not expect it to extend beyond Yosemite’s designated wilderness area. Efforts to contain the blaze are ongoing as crews work to protect the park’s natural resources and ensure visitor safety.
