A murder trial has commenced in Hong Kong involving the former husband and family members of socialite Abby Choi, more than three years after parts of her dismembered body were found. The case has drawn significant public attention in a city known for its low incidence of violent crime.
Abby Choi, a 28-year-old socialite renowned for sharing her life through Instagram posts highlighting fashion shows and photo shoots, was last publicly seen in February 2023. Days before her death, she had posted about attending a Dior show at Paris Fashion Week.
The accused are Choi’s ex-husband, Alex Kwong, along with his father, Kwong Kau, and brother, Anthony Kwong. They face charges of murder and preventing the lawful burial of a body. If convicted, they could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Police discovered several body parts at a residence in Tai Po, a suburban district of Hong Kong, in 2023. The investigation also involved searching a nearby landfill site for additional evidence. Authorities described the discovery as shocking given Hong Kong’s reputation for low violent crime rates.
The case has attracted considerable public and media interest, with dozens of people gathering outside the courtroom ahead of the trial. A live broadcast was arranged to allow those waiting to follow the proceedings.
Choi had two children with Kwong before their divorce and later remarried, having two younger children with her second husband. The trial is ongoing, with further details expected as the court hears evidence.
