Hong Kong has established its first university-led Wealth Management Academy to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the city’s expanding private wealth sector. Launched by the University of Hong Kong Business School, the academy aims to bridge policymakers, financial institutions, and academics in a joint effort to develop talent specializing in wealth management, asset management, and family office services.

The initiative seeks to foster collaboration across policy, industry, and research to strengthen human capital in wealth management, which is seen as a key factor influencing the effective management of financial assets. Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, highlighted the importance of the city’s unique position as a bridge between the mainland and the global market during the launch ceremony. He emphasized the increasing complexity of wealth management, including investment strategies, succession planning, governance, and cross-border considerations, all of which require highly skilled professionals.

The academy’s debut corresponds with Hong Kong’s efforts to solidify its status as a leading global wealth hub. The city recently surpassed Switzerland as the largest center worldwide for cross-border wealth management, with assets totaling approximately US$2.95 trillion last year compared to Switzerland’s US$2.94 trillion, according to data from Boston Consulting Group. Hongbin Cai, dean of the HKU Business School, noted that unlike Switzerland’s wealth base, which primarily originates from longstanding Western sources, Hong Kong is positioned to attract new wealth flows from the East, particularly from China and emerging markets across the region.

The Wealth Management Academy builds upon University of Hong Kong’s existing educational offerings in this field. Since 2017, the university has provided an undergraduate program in asset management and private banking. More recently, it has expanded to include master’s degree programs in wealth management and family wealth management, launched in 2024 and anticipated for 2025, respectively.

Through this new academy, Hong Kong aims to cultivate a workforce equipped to navigate the intricacies of wealth services in a dynamic and increasingly globalized financial environment, supporting the city’s ambition to remain a premier destination for wealth management and related financial services.
