A shooting in Midland, Texas, on Friday morning resulted in one fatality and 10 injuries, authorities reported. The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, had been previously sought by law enforcement after shooting at a police officer during a chase earlier in the week.
The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that Mata Villarreal opened fire on police officers and bystanders before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic. Midland Police Chief Greg Snow said officers responded to reports of an active shooter and encountered gunfire from the suspect. Several officers took cover behind patrol vehicles and were later extracted using an armored vehicle. No officers sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.
Following the initial confrontation, police evacuated the surrounding area to prevent further casualties. Authorities employed robots and drone technology to assess the interior of the building, and a few hours after the incident began, officials confirmed that Mata Villarreal was dead. Details surrounding the suspect’s death have not been released.
The individual killed in the shooting was identified by a city spokesperson as Ed Scott, described as a husband and father who worked in Midland’s solid waste department. Scott was also active in local and regional softball organizations.
Officials have provided limited information on the sequence of events that led up to the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. The community in Midland continues to respond to the incident, with city leaders emphasizing efforts to ensure public safety.
