British actor Anthony Head, renowned for his roles in the television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Ted Lasso," has died at the age of 72. Head passed away peacefully due to complications from pneumonia, according to a statement released by his daughters, actresses Emily and Daisy Head.

Head gained international recognition for his portrayal of Rupert Giles, the school librarian and mentor to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character in the American supernatural drama "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," which aired from 1997 to 2003. He left the regular cast during the show's sixth season but continued to make guest appearances until its conclusion. More recently, he appeared in the popular football comedy "Ted Lasso" as Rupert Mannion, the former owner of Richmond FC and estranged husband of Hannah Waddingham’s character Rebecca.

Born in the United Kingdom, Head first rose to prominence in the 1980s through a series of memorable Nescafe Gold Blend advertisements, where he played one half of a couple alongside actress Sharon Maughan. His distinctive baritone voice and on-screen presence helped establish a lasting career in both television and theatre.

In addition to his most famous roles, Head’s extensive credits include playing the Prime Minister in the sketch show "Little Britain," portraying Uther Pendragon in the fantasy series "Merlin," and appearing in British dramas such as "Motherland," "Manchild," "Silent Witness," "Spooks," "Doctor Who," and "My Family." He also took part in the film "Repo! The Genetic Opera" and joined the cast of BBC Radio 4’s long-running drama "The Archers" as Robin Fairbrother in 2018.

Head was also an accomplished singer, performing in West End productions and contributing to various soundtracks, including the musical episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

The actor’s daughters, Emily and Daisy, spoke of their grief following the loss of their father, as well as their mother, Sarah Fisher, an animal welfare advocate who died in December at the age of 61. Emily Head is best known for her role in the E4 sitcom "The Inbetweeners," while Daisy Head has appeared in television series such as "Harlots," "Shadow and Bone," and "The Gray House."

Anthony Head’s brother, Murray Head, is also an actor and singer, noted for his performance in the 1971 film "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and for the 1984 hit single "One Night in Bangkok" from the musical "Chess."

In their statement, Emily and Daisy described their father as a passionate professional who considered himself fortunate to have worked with talented colleagues throughout his decades-long career. They acknowledged the profound void his passing leaves but expressed solace in the enduring legacy of his work and the impact he had on audiences around the world.
