RJ Mitte, the actor best known for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. in the acclaimed television series Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34. He passed away in Brownsville, Texas, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Mitte rose to international prominence with Breaking Bad, which aired from 2008 to 2013 and earned critical acclaim, frequently recognized as one of the greatest TV shows of the 21st century. In the series, he portrayed the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, a high school chemistry teacher who turns to drug manufacturing after a cancer diagnosis. Mitte’s real-life experience with cerebral palsy lent authenticity to the character and helped raise awareness about disability representation in Hollywood, a cause he championed throughout his career.
Beyond his work on Breaking Bad, Mitte also appeared in other films, including the 2020 horror movie The Oak Room, and worked as a co-host for Channel 4’s coverage of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. He was actively involved in philanthropy through the Mitte Foundation, an organization he led to support people with disabilities.
Tributes from colleagues highlighted both his professional talent and his character off-screen. Dean Norris, who played his on-screen uncle Hank Schrader in the series, expressed deep sorrow, noting Mitte’s kindness and the mentorship he provided on set. Mitte is survived by his fiancée, Kennedy Suarez.
Shortly before his death, Mitte shared his enthusiasm for a possible Breaking Bad spin-off, having discussed ideas for a reboot with the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan. His passing has been widely mourned by fans and the entertainment community alike, recognizing his contributions both as an actor and as an advocate for disability inclusion.
