Adam Ramsay-Peaty, British swimmer and three-time Olympic champion, faced an unexpected delay during the heats of the men’s 100 metres breaststroke at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow on July 24. The competition was briefly halted when a lane divider snapped off the wall just minutes before Ramsay-Peaty was due to start his race.

The broken lane divider, part of the anti-wave ropes designed to separate swimmers and reduce turbulence, was in lane six. The issue was quickly addressed by an official who entered the pool to repair the equipment, resulting in a delay of approximately ten minutes. Ramsay-Peaty waited patiently alongside the other seven swimmers in his heat.

Despite the interruption, Ramsay-Peaty delivered a strong performance, recording a time of 59.46 seconds. He was among only three men to complete the heats in under one minute. The fastest qualifier from the heats improved further in the semi-finals, posting a 59.19 to secure a place in the final scheduled for later that evening.

Speaking after the race, Ramsay-Peaty downplayed the disruption, describing it as a minor setback. “It’s a bit of extra time to enjoy the crowd,” he said. “I’m a sprinter, so every second counts, but stuff happens in sport and stuff happens in life. You’ve just got to get on with it.” He acknowledged the potential impact on hydration but noted that he had performed better under more challenging conditions before.

Ramsay-Peaty returned to the Glasgow venue where he won two Commonwealth titles 12 years ago, marking a full-circle moment in his career. Since his debut at the Friendly Games in 2014, he has amassed 31 gold medals across Olympic, World, European, and Commonwealth competitions, along with multiple world records. This event represents his fourth participation in the Friendly Games.

The 31-year-old swimmer, originally from Uttoxeter and now based in London, also reflected on the changes in his personal and professional life since his last appearance in Glasgow. He noted life milestones including a stint on “Strictly Come Dancing,” marriage to Holly Ramsay—the daughter of chef Gordon Ramsay—and fatherhood, with a second child expected.

“We’ve got a very busy two weeks coming up, so we are reserving energy where we can,” Ramsay-Peaty said. “To be back here, well, it’s definitely full circle. Twelve years is a long time for any athlete.” He added that his growth both as an athlete and a person has been significant since his first visit to the venue, when he had few world records to his name.

With the final approaching, Ramsay-Peaty remains focused on adding to his medal collection and building on his strong performance in the heats and semi-finals.
