KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of addressing unauthorized land encroachment promptly, highlighting the potential impact on national planning and public interests. Speaking at the 83rd National Land Council meeting, Anwar called for strengthened enforcement and urged that concerns raised by stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, be dealt with swiftly to ensure transparent and accurate communication.

“As we confront the effects of climate change, land governance can no longer focus solely on economic returns or physical development,” Anwar said. He stressed the need for prudent and systematic land management to reduce environmental risks while supporting sustainable development.

The government remains committed to responsible land administration policies designed to serve the public’s well-being, the Prime Minister added.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability highlighted several key topics discussed during the council meeting. Among them were proposals to review royalty rates on minerals and rock materials, and the development of a National Critical Minerals Policy aimed at managing these resources as strategic national assets. The ministry noted the policy’s significance amid technological advancements, the global energy transition, and rising demand for critical minerals.

Additionally, the council considered submissions to revise land tax rates in the northern states of Kedah and Perlis. These proposals were resubmitted in accordance with relevant legal frameworks for further deliberation.

The ministry underscored the importance of sustained coordination between federal and state governments to ensure land policies and decisions are executed in a consistent and structured manner, respecting constitutional provisions. Strengthening these cooperative efforts is viewed as essential to effective land governance.

The National Land Council will continue to function as a central forum to adapt Malaysia’s land policies and administration to evolving challenges and priorities, balancing current needs with long-term sustainability and national interests.
