Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has announced a $6.2 billion investment in the development of the Umm Shaif Gas Cap project, aimed at producing 600 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas. This output represents approximately 10 percent of the United Arab Emirates’ daily domestic gas consumption, underscoring the project’s significance for the country’s energy security.

The initiative is designed to support the UAE’s growing demand for natural gas, driven by the expansion of industrial sectors and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Additionally, the project will contribute to diversifying and expanding Adnoc’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio. A consortium comprising TotalEnergies, the Italian energy company Eni, and China National Petroleum Corporation will collaborate with Adnoc on the project.

Alongside the final investment approval, Adnoc awarded three engineering, procurement, and construction contracts valued at approximately 18.8 billion dirhams (around $5.1 billion) for offshore infrastructure development. These contracts have been allocated to a mix of Emirati and international firms.

The UAE holds the world’s seventh-largest natural gas reserves, and Adnoc has been intensifying its efforts to harness these resources under its broader gas growth strategy. This latest investment aligns with the company’s push to maximize gas production capabilities and reinforce the country’s energy independence.

This development follows the recent launch of Adnoc’s global platform for LNG marketing and trading, based in the Abu Dhabi Global Market. The platform seeks to establish the UAE as a significant player in the LNG market, with plans to market up to 47 million tons per year by 2035.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, who also serves as Managing Director and CEO of Adnoc, emphasized the company’s commitment to accelerating the implementation of its integrated gas strategy. He noted the focus on enhancing resource utilization within the UAE and solidifying Adnoc’s position in the global LNG sector.
