Newcastle’s New Vic Theatre will present a reimagined version of Shakespeare’s *Romeo and Juliet* from September 17 to October 10, featuring Natalie Casey and Russell Kane in the leading roles. The production, staged by Not Too Tame and directed by Jimmy Fairhurst, explores the iconic lovers as mature adults rather than the teenagers traditionally portrayed.
Fairhurst described Casey’s audition as a powerful and commanding interpretation that made the role uniquely her own, likening the adaptation’s tone to the gritty realism found in filmmaker Shane Meadows’s work. Casey, 46, is currently engaged in a tour of the dark drama *2:22 A Ghost Story*. Her casting signals a departure from the typical youthful depiction of Juliet, emphasizing a more seasoned perspective.
Russell Kane, 50, who has recently shared Shakespearean monologues on social media in informal settings such as while doing household chores or engaging with dating apps, expressed enthusiasm for the project. He stated he feels “absolutely honoured and excited” to be part of the production, which remains faithful to Shakespeare’s original text while presenting it in a way intended to “break your hearts and blow your socks off” through fresh staging.
This adult reinterpretation aims to bring new emotional depth to the classic tragedy by situating its characters in middle age, potentially offering audiences a novel lens through which to engage with the familiar story. The New Vic Theatre’s upcoming run promises a bold approach to one of Shakespeare's most enduring works.
