Newcastle’s New Vic Theatre will present a reimagined production of William Shakespeare’s *Romeo and Juliet* from September 17 to October 10, featuring Natalie Casey and Russell Kane in the lead roles. The forthcoming staging, produced by Not Too Tame, explores the iconic characters as middle-aged individuals, offering a fresh perspective on the classic tragedy.

Director Jimmy Fairhurst described the production as “adult” rather than “X-rated,” emphasizing a mature reinterpretation of the traditionally youthful protagonists. Fairhurst praised Casey’s audition for its commanding presence, noting she “grabbed the thing by the throat and made it hers,” likening the delivery of Shakespeare’s language to the gritty style of filmmaker Shane Meadows.

Casey, 46, is currently engaged in the touring production of *2:22 A Ghost Story*, demonstrating her range in dramatic roles. Russell Kane, 50, known for his comedic work, has recently gained attention for reciting Shakespeare’s soliloquies on social media during everyday activities such as washing dishes and engaging with mock dating applications. Kane expressed enthusiasm about the project, calling it an honor and promising that while the original text will remain intact, the staging will offer an emotionally impactful and unexpected experience.

The New Vic Theatre’s upcoming production seeks to challenge traditional perceptions of the star-crossed lovers by reflecting on themes of love and loss through the lens of middle age, blending Shakespeare’s timeless language with contemporary sensibilities.
