Southern California’s South Bay region is rapidly emerging as a major hub for aerospace and defense companies, drawing businesses and talent from across the globe to support the expanding space economy. This modern industrial surge is marked by startups and established firms alike relocating or opening offices in cities such as Torrance, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Long Beach, and surrounding areas.
Companies like Zenno Astronautics, founded in New Zealand nine years ago, have recently chosen the region for their U.S. headquarters. Zenno’s founder and CEO, Max Arshavsky, highlighted the concentration of hardware manufacturers producing rockets and satellites in Los Angeles as a primary reason for the move. He emphasized the region’s deep talent pool and supportive industrial ecosystem, which he found lacking elsewhere.
Similarly, Roboze, an Italian additive manufacturing firm, has expanded its U.S. presence by establishing operations in El Segundo. CEO Alessio Lorusso cited Southern California’s collaborative culture and proximity to aerospace and defense clients as key factors. The company recently received Airbus qualification for its Argo 500 Hyperspeed Mission Ready Production System, underscoring growing ties between local firms and major aerospace players. Lorusso also pointed to the region’s ability to attract and retain engineering talent as vital to scaling production of components used in drones, aircraft, and missiles.
Beyond aerospace manufacturing, other hard tech ventures have gravitated to the area. Smart Tire Co., leveraging NASA technology for airless tires, relocated its headquarters from Akron, Ohio to Hawthorne this year. Lazarus Energy, formed by former Anduril engineers, also chose Southern California to develop turbines powered by supercritical carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, Maglut Heavy Industries moved from the Bay Area to Long Beach, seeking a business climate more favorable to capital-intensive manufacturing, particularly in rare earth mineral processing critical to defense and energy.
Local governments and economic development groups are actively supporting this growth by facilitating permitting and regulatory navigation for highly specialized technologies, including hypersonic weapons and satellite manufacturing. El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel emphasized the city’s understanding of industrial needs and its strategic location near major transportation routes, which attracts diverse businesses—from aerospace to advertising agencies. He noted the area’s unique ecosystem balances legacy companies, startups, and investors, fostering collaboration rather than competition.
Community-building efforts among founders and engineers, such as networking breakfasts, beach bonfires, and specialist groups like the “Gundo Gals,” have created an informal yet robust support system. This environment encourages knowledge sharing and partnership, further strengthening the regional cluster.
The South Bay’s appeal also stems from flexible labor laws compared to other international markets, enabling companies to more easily recruit and retain skilled engineers. Additionally, the region benefits from a strong university system supplying talent and from a critical mass of aerospace and defense firms, including numerous spin-offs from SpaceX and others aiming to tap into a global space economy projected to grow toward $1 trillion in the coming decade.
While other regions such as the Bay Area and Texas offer recognized advantages, local leaders argue Southern California’s combination of engineering expertise, industrial infrastructure, and collaborative culture uniquely positions it as a premier destination for aerospace and defense innovation. As Pimentel remarked, comparisons with Texas and other centers often lead companies to conclude that South Bay provides unmatched resources for high-tech design and manufacturing.
With continued interest from both domestic and foreign companies, Southern California’s aerospace and defense industry appears poised for sustained growth, cementing the region’s status as a vital player in the future of space and defense technologies.
