AFC Fylde returned to winning form with a 2-0 victory over Scunthorpe United on Saturday, halting a two-match skid and keeping their ambitions for a play-off spot alive. The match, held at Fylde’s home ground, saw goals in each half from Danny Mayor and left-back Aaron Drewe, alongside a clean sheet for goalkeeper Zac Jones.

Fylde’s manager Craig Mahon praised his squad’s response following recent setbacks. “Two goals and a clean sheet is the perfect response after losing our last two matches,” Mahon said. “We’ve worked on a few things this week, how we play, how we defend and it’s good to see it all come to fruition. The lads deserve all the credit for their commitment.” Despite fielding a somewhat makeshift side, Mahon added that his players gave their all in pursuit of the win.

The opening goal came in the 20th minute following sustained pressure from Fylde. Luca Thomas’s shot was initially saved by Scunthorpe goalkeeper Maison Campbell, but Mayor was on hand to head home the rebound. Fylde dominated possession during the first half and created additional chances, although Thomas missed several opportunities to extend the lead. Scunthorpe narrowly avoided conceding another goal right before halftime when James Norwood’s header forced a crucial save from Jones.

The second half saw Fylde continue to control the game, and their persistence paid off in the 66th minute. Will Lancaster delivered a low-driven cross that Drewe converted at the far post. Scunthorpe then introduced four substitutes, including three forwards, in an attempt to change the game’s momentum. However, Fylde remained the stronger side, with Theo Upton’s shot saved by Campbell late in the match and Thomas hitting the post deep into stoppage time.

Scunthorpe manager Andy Butler expressed frustration following the result, citing defensive and offensive shortcomings. “We conceded two bad goals and if you can’t get the basics right you make it hard work for yourselves, so I’m very disappointed,” Butler said. “It all comes back to being clinical. We haven’t been clinical in both boxes. Defensively and offensively we’ve been shipping goals and not scoring goals. So it’s a bad recipe.”

The win strengthens AFC Fylde’s position as they maintain pressure on play-off contenders, while Scunthorpe United suffer their fourth defeat in five matches and remain entrenched in the league’s bottom four.

The match was attended by 1,412 spectators and officiated by referee Dale Baines.
