AFC Fylde’s 17-match unbeaten streak at home came to an end on Saturday as Altrincham secured a 2-1 victory in a National League clash that highlighted both teams’ recent strong form. The result marked Altrincham’s fifth win in six games, continuing their upward trajectory in the league standings.
The match at Fylde’s Mill Farm stadium opened with intense action, featuring a flurry of goals within a five-minute span in the first half. Kane Hemmings put Altrincham ahead in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a cross from Matty Kosylo. However, Fylde responded quickly through Tom Whelan, who equalized shortly afterward with a close-range finish. The lead changed hands again when Kosylo struck from distance in the 20th minute, sending the visitors ahead 2-1.
After that rapid sequence, both teams saw fewer clear chances despite Altrincham’s Jimmy Knowles hitting the woodwork twice in the second half and Fylde’s goalkeeper Zac Jones making important saves, including one from Lucas Weaver late in the game. Manager Neil Gibson praised his side’s performance, emphasizing their tactical discipline and physical presence on the pitch.
“Fylde came into this game second in the table and were full of confidence,” Gibson said. “We knew we had to be brave and lock on man-to-man across the pitch, pressing effectively. We executed a similar game plan to Wednesday’s win against Hartlepool, and it paid off again today. Kane Hemmings continues to be a key player for us, providing that physical outlet we’ve needed.”
Fylde’s coach Craig Mahon expressed disappointment but acknowledged his players may have been affected by their recent exertions. “I don’t think we were at our usual levels or the standard we’ve set over the last few games,” Mahon said. “The effort of the past two matches probably took its toll today. It’s unfortunate to lose at home after a positive spell, but we’ll regroup and look to move forward.”
The defeat halted Fylde’s home unbeaten run and left them vulnerable to challenges from teams like Altrincham, who are closing the gap in the National League title race. Both sides will look to build on their recent performances as the campaign progresses.
