AFC Portchester and Westfield played to a 1-1 draw in their Isthmian League South Central Division match on Saturday, a result that reflected the close competition expected between two sides aiming to improve on their previous season’s play-off appearances.

With AFC Portchester’s new 3G pitch under construction, the match was held at the AEI Stadium, the temporary home of Step 3 club Gosport Borough, located on the South Coast. Weather conditions were notably warm, adding an extra challenge for the players.

The first half ended goalless, but at halftime AFC Portchester’s manager delivered a motivational talk that appeared to inspire his team. Shortly after the break, Portchester took the lead when Spencer Spurway provided an incisive through ball to Ryan Pennery, who converted with a well-placed shot beyond Westfield goalkeeper Lewis Gallifent in the 63rd minute.

Pennery remained a constant threat, generating two more scoring opportunities in quick succession. One of these efforts came close to doubling Portchester’s lead when a header struck the crossbar before being saved. Westfield responded with attacking pressure as the match progressed and nearly secured a late winner when Gordon’s free-kick narrowly missed the target.

Both managers expressed satisfaction with the outcome, viewing the shared points as a positive start to the campaign given their clubs’ ambitions to advance beyond last season’s achievements.
