AFC Rushden & Diamonds advanced to the third qualifying round of the competition for the first time in a decade following a 3-1 victory over Peterborough Sports. The match took place on Saturday at AFC Rushden’s home ground.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Matt Warburton struck a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area into the net. The lead was quickly extended nine minutes later as Tejan Thomas added a second goal, helping AFC Rushden & Diamonds build a comfortable advantage.
Peterborough Sports responded just before halftime, narrowing the deficit through Lewis Green, who headed in a goal for the visitors. Despite that goal, AFC Rushden & Diamonds resumed the second half with increased intensity and maintained control of the match.
In the 62nd minute, Jordan O’Brien secured the win with his fifth goal of the competition. O’Brien made an incisive run into the box before finishing confidently to put his team two goals clear. The final scoreline reflected AFC Rushden & Diamonds’ strong performance across both halves as they sealed progression to the next stage.
