AFC Totton ended a seven-match losing streak with a decisive 3-1 victory over Hemel Hempstead at the latter’s home ground on Sunday. The match was largely decided in the first half, where most of the scoring action took place.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Josh Sims seized on a chipped pass, maneuvered past defender Michael Johnson, and calmly finished to give AFC Totton the lead. Hemel Hempstead responded soon after, earning a penalty when Marshall Francis was fouled in the box. Francis converted the spot-kick himself, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 23rd minute.
However, AFC Totton regained the advantage just minutes later. Tony Lee capitalized on a defensive error by the home side to slot home a second goal for the visitors. The score remained 2-1 going into halftime.
Early in the second half, Torquay’s Cooke nearly extended the lead with a well-angled shot that was blocked by Hemel Hempstead goalkeeper Holden. The rebound opportunity proved costly for the hosts, as a subsequent misplaced pass set up Ollie Godziemski. Godziemski finished the move in the 81st minute, securing a 3-1 lead that would hold until the final whistle.
Hemel Hempstead continues to struggle at home and remains without a victory on their own turf this season. Their inability to capitalize on opportunities and defensive lapses have contributed to their gradual slide down the league standings. Meanwhile, AFC Totton’s win offers a significant morale boost following a difficult run of results.
