Actor Ben Affleck and “Jeopardy!” champion Jamie Ding teamed up to win the $1 million grand prize on ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” during a recent episode of the long-running game show. The pair entered the final segment with two questions remaining, having picked up from the previous installment.
The penultimate $500,000 question asked which achievement occurred just two months after a New York Times article claimed it would take “1 million to 10 million years” to happen. The options were splitting the atom, cloning a mammal, the first airplane flight, or the polio vaccine. Ding quickly identified the correct answer as the first airplane flight, a choice that Affleck confirmed. Affleck noted that he remembered the question vaguely due to a period when he researched examples of media inaccuracies, recalling the Wright brothers and the year 1905. Ding corrected the date to 1903, prompting host Jimmy Kimmel to joke that Ding was “so much smarter” than Affleck’s longtime collaborator, Matt Damon, who had also won $1 million on the show the previous year alongside “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings.
Despite their informed guesses, the duo used their 50/50 lifeline, which narrowed the options to splitting the atom or the first flight. They then selected the first flight correctly, advancing to the final question.
The last question asked which name was not among those of turkeys pardoned by U.S. presidents in an annual Thanksgiving tradition. The choices were Peanut Butter and Jelly, Tater and Tot, Mac and Cheese, and Spaghetti and Meatball. Affleck expressed disbelief and suggested using their Ask the Host lifeline. While Kimmel guessed “Spaghetti and Meatball,” he admitted uncertainty. Their Phone-a-Friend lifeline did not assist, but in the end, Ding and Affleck chose “Spaghetti and Meatball” as the correct answer, securing the $1 million prize.
Affleck announced that the winnings would be donated to his nonprofit organization, the Eastern Congo Initiative, which focuses on supporting community-driven development in the region.
