Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Africa as a strategic partner during the 63rd anniversary celebrations of Africa Day held on Monday. The event underscored growing cooperation between Qatar and African nations in areas such as diplomacy, trade, education, development, and cultural exchange.
H.E. Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library, highlighted the importance of Africa Day as a symbol of the continent’s unity and its ongoing journey toward freedom, dignity, and self-determination. Dr. Al Kawari emphasized Africa’s rich history and future potential, noting the continent’s youthful population, abundant resources, and expanding economies as key factors positioning Africa to play a significant role on the global stage.
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Africa, Dr. Al Kawari recalled his tenure as Qatar’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1984 to 1990. He also referenced his 2017 campaign for the UNESCO director-general post, which involved extensive travel across African countries. These experiences deepened his appreciation for Africa’s cultural diversity, dynamic societies, and the warm support expressed by African nations.
Dr. Al Kawari praised Africa’s efforts to enhance regional cooperation and economic integration, as well as its pursuit of development aligned with the continent’s own priorities.
The event was attended by prominent Qatari officials including H.E. Dr. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; H.E. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Director-General of the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara); and various diplomatic figures and representatives of international organizations accredited to Qatar. He recalled the historic founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and affirmed that the legacy of Africa’s founding leaders continues to inspire efforts toward solidarity, dignity, and sustainable growth.
Ambassador Sow highlighted Africa’s ongoing transformation and expanding global influence. He expressed gratitude to Qatar, under the leadership of Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for its sustained support of African communities and its expanding partnerships across sectors including education, health, energy, food security, and sports.
