Lex Eala, the top-seeded Filipina tennis player, secured a commanding victory in her opening match at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya, overcoming Thailand’s Patcharin Cheepchandej 6-1, 6-0 in a contest lasting 55 minutes. The match faced an initial delay due to heavy rain, prompting organizers to move play indoors to Court C at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center.

Eala quickly adapted to the change in conditions, breaking early and maintaining control throughout the match. She conceded just a single game in the first set before shutting out her opponent in the second, demonstrating strong form on the court.

The 21-year-old arrived in Nagoya ranked 18th in the world, making her the highest-ranked player in the women’s singles draw. Eala is competing despite a potential penalty from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), as the Asian Games schedule overlaps with the mandatory China Open. Her participation could result in a fine up to $10,000 and the loss of ranking points if her exemption request is denied.

At the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023, Eala earned bronze medals in both women’s singles and mixed doubles. This year, she is aiming for gold as she advances to face Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland in the quarterfinals scheduled for the following day.

In addition to her singles campaign, Eala will compete in women’s doubles alongside compatriot Shaira Hope Rivera. The duo is set to face Hong Kong’s Lai Ching Laam and Kallista Liu in their upcoming match.
