A Friday night high school football game between San Juan Hills High and San Clemente was interrupted by a lengthy lightning delay but ultimately resumed to deliver a highly anticipated matchup at Badlands Stadium. The game, which had not been played since 2021, drew a lively crowd and carried significant emotional weight for both communities, coming shortly after the destructive Norte fire that affected south Orange County.
Play began with intense energy, but after just over five minutes, officials halted the contest and moved both teams and fans into the basketball gym for safety amid the weather delay. The lightning storm paused the game for approximately 90 minutes, threatening to cancel the event entirely. However, once conditions improved, the teams returned to the field to complete the game.
San Juan Hills, now 8-1 on the season, secured a 16-0 victory over San Clemente (7-1), marking their first win against the Tritons since 2015. The result positions San Juan Hills on the verge of an Alpha League title, with a key upcoming game against Mission Viejo. The loss likely eliminates San Clemente from playoff contention in the CIF Southern Section Division 1.
The defensive battle featured standout performances, particularly from San Juan Hills junior defensive back Arthur Tuverson, who intercepted a pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown in the closing moments. Tuverson, who anticipated the opposing team’s passing desperation, said the pick was a decisive play. “I made the play. I was waiting for it,” he said afterwards.
Both teams played without their starting quarterbacks due to injuries. San Juan Hills relied on senior Parker Armstrong, who completed 17 of 19 passes for 172 yards and maintained the offense efficiently without turnovers for the seventh consecutive game. San Clemente introduced freshman Koston James under center, who finished 11-for-16 passing but threw two interceptions in his varsity debut during a challenging night.
San Clemente coach Jaime Ortiz had emphasized the need for strong defense and limiting big plays. While the Tritons held San Juan Hills to just 20 rushing yards, turnovers and a persistent defensive front allowed the Stallions to control the game. A late flea flicker attempt by San Clemente was quickly disrupted by San Juan Hills’ defense, exemplifying the Stallions’ sustained energy despite the long weather delay.
San Clemente leveraged senior two-way athlete Jaxson Rex out of the wildcat formation to generate offense. The Brigham Young commit accounted for five receptions totaling 42 yards and added 32 rushing yards. San Juan Hills receiver Luke Frith, a Texas State commit, contributed four catches for 48 yards.
The intense atmosphere, combined with the resilience demonstrated by both teams and fans during the weather interruption, underscored the importance of the game for the local communities still recovering from recent wildfires. San Juan Hills now turns its attention to the upcoming matchup against Mission Viejo, while San Clemente faces an early playoff exit.
