Bennett Konkey, a standout wide receiver from Geneva High School, recently reaffirmed his commitment to the University of Illinois despite receiving a late offer from Ohio State. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete, who initially committed to Illinois on June 16, has emerged as a highly regarded recruit after a dominant regular season, earning a four-star rating from national recruiting services.
Konkey attracted significant attention following his elevated recruitment status, culminating in Ohio State extending an offer last week. While acknowledging the excitement of such a development, Konkey emphasized his intent to remain with Illinois and continue supporting the program.
“It was important for me to be on the sidelines to show I’m still committed and I’m still here,” Konkey said following Illinois’ recent 21-10 upset victory over Oregon in Champaign. The win was led by true freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II, who could potentially be Konkey’s quarterback next season.
Prior to his Illinois commitment, Konkey considered other major programs including Iowa, Northwestern, and Iowa State. Geneva coach Boone Thorgesen praised Konkey’s grounded approach amid the attention, highlighting his maturity and dedication to his teammates. “He is who he is. You wouldn’t know what was going on,” Thorgesen said. “The kid that has all these offers is the best teammate out there.”
Konkey’s longtime friend and Geneva senior quarterback, Ben Peterson, an Eastern Michigan recruit, echoed that sentiment. Peterson noted the mental pressures surrounding the recruiting process and commended Konkey’s professionalism in handling it. “He’s taking it like a professional, like an adult,” Peterson said. “Mentally, it’s a lot … People don’t always see that because they just see the shiny stuff.”
On the field, both players have produced impressive statistics in their senior campaign, helping Geneva secure the top ranking in Class 6A. Peterson has completed 151 of 210 passes for 2,677 yards and 34 touchdowns with only two interceptions. Konkey has recorded 70 receptions for 1,397 yards and 19 touchdowns, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a score.
Konkey also credits former Geneva star and current Georgia receiver Talyn Taylor for his development and conduct during the recruitment process. “Just watching him, how he carries himself,” Konkey said. “I learned a lot from him that has accelerated my game so much.” The two maintain occasional communication, with Taylor recently congratulating Konkey on the Ohio State offer.
With National Signing Day set for December 2, Konkey remains focused on Geneva’s pursuit of a state championship. “This is the main focus,” he said. “My parents are helping me a lot, talking to coaches … my parents are trying to let me focus on winning this state championship, then we’ll focus on college.”
Reflecting on the season and recruitment journey, Konkey acknowledged the pressures but expressed gratitude and determination. “It’s a lot, but I’m handling it well,” he said. “This is a dream come true.”
