A 69-year-old man has appeared in court charged with assaulting an elderly dementia patient at a residential aged-care facility in southwestern Sydney. The alleged incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, June 21, in the garden area of Hammond Care’s Linden Cottage at Hammondville.
The victim, an 87-year-old resident diagnosed with dementia, sustained significant injuries to his face, including bruising and bleeding from the ear, according to disturbing images shared publicly. The accused, fellow resident Geoffrey Innes, was arrested and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm with a domestic violence component. He was taken to hospital under police guard following the alleged attack.
Innes made his first court appearance on Friday at Liverpool Local Court, where he was granted strict conditional bail. He is permitted to reside at home while awaiting his next scheduled court date on July 21.
Jenny Somerton, executive general manager at Hammond Care, described the incident as “deeply saddening” during an interview on local radio. She confirmed the facility provides care to patients exhibiting severe psychological and behavioral symptoms of dementia and that all residents are supervised with various monitoring systems in place. Somerton acknowledged that despite these precautions, triggers between residents can occasionally lead to aggressive behavior.
Somerton emphasized that the facility was not understaffed at the time and is currently reviewing all monitoring protocols to better understand the circumstances surrounding the event. However, she declined to provide further specifics on security measures due to privacy and ongoing investigations.
The victim’s daughter, Margaret, expressed concern about the safeguards active at the time and recounted how her elderly mother was initially excluded from accompanying her father to the hospital. “They wanted to send him to the hospital and told Mum, ‘No need to come, we’re going to put him in the ambulance,’” Margaret said. Her 85-year-old mother insisted on joining her husband in the ambulance and was reportedly shocked by his condition upon arrival.
The incident has raised questions about resident safety and supervision at facilities catering to individuals with complex dementia-related behaviors while authorities continue to investigate the case.
