In a factory on the outskirts of Zhengzhou, Henan province, Zhengzhou Zhongxing Longfeng Agricultural Machinery Equipment Co is preparing to export one of its largest farm implements, a 13-furrow hydraulic reversible plow designed for large-scale commercial farming. Capable of turning approximately 6.5 meters of soil in a single pass, this equipment exemplifies the company’s push toward high-end agricultural machinery through increased focus on engineering, automation, and localized innovation.
Founded in 1993, Longfeng has specialized in manufacturing plows, harrows, and seeders for more than 30 years. Its products serve major grain-producing regions across China and are increasingly exported to markets including Russia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America. The firm now reportedly holds the largest domestic market share in China for hydraulic reversible plows with four or more furrows—a segment previously dominated by European manufacturers.
About a decade ago, Longfeng leaders sought partnerships with European counterparts but encountered resistance, with their cooperation proposals declined. This setback became a catalyst for the company’s decision to focus on self-reliant product development. “Why can’t we build products as good as theirs?” recalled Hai Zhiyong, one of Longfeng’s directors, highlighting a question that shaped the company’s research agenda for the following years.
Since then, Longfeng has expanded beyond three-furrow plows to manufacturing machines with up to 13 furrows. The company has integrated hydraulic width adjustment mechanisms and replaced key imported components with domestically developed alternatives. This shift reflects a strategic emphasis on in-house technology development rather than dependence on foreign imports.
Chen Xuanda, Longfeng’s head of research and development, noted that their work begins with materials, production processes, and manufacturing equipment. The company designs and builds many of its own testing systems to address unique engineering challenges and develop solutions unavailable on the market. Longfeng currently holds over 100 utility model and design patents and allocates between 5 and 10 percent of annual revenue toward research and development, with approximately 15 percent of its staff engaged in R&D activities.
Longfeng’s international market penetration began around five years ago with exports to Russia, where the high degree of farm mechanization has driven demand for larger agricultural machinery. This has spurred the development of 12- and 13-furrow plows as well as high-capacity seeders. Conversely, in Southeast Asia’s smaller farm settings, the company focuses on more compact models that better suit local conditions. According to Chen, customer demands from diverse overseas markets serve as an additional impetus for ongoing product improvements.
Longfeng’s leadership sees global expansion as a natural progression once product quality, manufacturing practices, and service standards align with international expectations. As Hai described, continuous innovation remains essential for maintaining competitiveness in markets long led by established multinational manufacturers.
