Macquarie University has introduced an AI chatbot named Virtual Peer into two mandatory online psychology units as part of its teaching strategy, marking a broader trend among Australian universities incorporating artificial intelligence into education. Virtual Peer guides students through weekly scenario-based exercises and asks questions to supplement traditional learning materials such as readings, quizzes, and videos. However, the AI-driven activities and core online materials are both optional, with student assessment based on separate research projects and exams.
The university shifted these subjects entirely online for the second semester of 2026 after offering in-person classes during the first semester. Macquarie plans to reintroduce on-campus options in alternate semesters from 2027, allowing students to choose between formats. Prior to the AI integration, students could join weekly tutorials via Zoom with paid academic staff. Currently, interaction outside Virtual Peer consists of optional, unstructured Zoom feedback sessions with tutors, with attendance varying and peaking around assessment deadlines. Despite concerns, Macquarie emphasized that Virtual Peer supplements rather than replaces human educators. The chatbot was developed in collaboration with faculty who uploaded and verified the content to decrease misinformation. University officials also stated they monitor student interactions with the AI.
Reactions from students have been mixed. One student, speaking anonymously, described the experience as unsatisfactory, expressing concerns that AI is supplanting traditional teaching roles. The student reported feeling "short-changed" due to program changes that limited their options to online study with AI involvement rather than live instruction.
Macquarie’s adoption of AI parallels moves by other Australian institutions, including the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney, which are also integrating AI-powered platforms to assist teaching. The University of Sydney promotes its bespoke generative AI tool “Cogniti,” used by hundreds of academics for chatbots and scenario-based learning. Sydney officials have emphasized that technology aims to enhance the student experience but will not replace human judgment, relationships, or accountability. A university spokesperson denied the initiative is a cost-saving measure.
Despite university reassurances, concerns have been raised across the sector about the growing reliance on AI amid reductions in academic staff due to funding constraints. Peter Chen, president of the National Tertiary Education Union’s University of Sydney branch, highlighted fears among staff about job security and diminishing job satisfaction as AI tools take on greater teaching responsibilities. These anxieties have contributed to planned strike action by university staff demanding protections related to AI use, workload management, and job security. Sydney officials have called the strike premature, advocating for AI governance through flexible policy rather than long-term enterprise agreements.
Meanwhile, Central Queensland University is piloting its own AI support tool, “Birdy,” and one academic there has developed a personalized AI avatar to assist her students. Meena Jha, an associate professor and head of pedagogy and technology at CQU, stressed the importance of maintaining human interaction in education, warning against replacing human tutors entirely with AI due to the risk to engagement.
Nationally, university staff continue to call for comprehensive workplace agreements that specifically address the integration of AI, citing ongoing workload crises and the potential for exacerbated challenges if AI adoption is managed piecemeal. Dr Alison Barnes, national president of the NTEU and a Macquarie academic, expressed concern that insufficient planning around AI could create deeper problems for staff and students alike as the technology becomes more prevalent in higher education.
