WARREN, Mich. — The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers is driving a surge in demand for skilled trade workers, particularly electricians, in the Detroit area. OpenAI’s recently announced data center project in Saline Township, approximately an hour from Detroit, represents the largest single investment in Michigan’s history, according to state officials. The scale of the project requires hundreds of electricians working extended shifts, often 10 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tyler Shelton, a 29-year-old electrician apprentice training at the Detroit Electrical Industry Training Center, described the shifting labor landscape. While his company still has electrical work in the city, many of his coworkers are being drawn to the lucrative opportunities at the new data centers. “Everybody wants that money,” Shelton said during a lunch break on one of his twice-monthly classroom days. However, he expressed ambivalence about the long hours demanded by data center work, noting the challenge of balancing the financial incentives with personal life goals such as homeownership.

The data center construction boom is a prominent concern at the training center, which educates approximately 850 apprentices at any given time. The increasing pull of these large-scale projects, located in more remote parts of the state, is offering some of the highest wages and bonuses in the electrical trade, intensifying competition for skilled labor.

To address the growing need for trained electricians, AI companies and their contractors are investing heavily in workforce development. The Detroit training center is one of about 270 such facilities supported through a partnership between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and electrical contractors. This collaboration is part of a broader $50 million commitment aimed at expanding the pipeline of qualified tradespeople capable of building and maintaining the infrastructure required by expanding data center operations.

The AI industry’s deepening reliance on physical infrastructure like data centers underscores the critical role of tradespeople in supporting technological advancement. It also highlights the evolving dynamics of the skilled labor market in regions such as Michigan, where traditional construction and electrical work are increasingly intertwined with the demands of the digital economy.
