Anthropic, the artificial intelligence developer known for its Claude chatbot, announced plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund aimed at supporting the broader societal impacts of AI technology. The commitment, subject to shareholder approval, is valued at approximately $48 billion based on the company’s most recent valuation in May. Additionally, Anthropic said it would increase its contribution to the fund by 2% for every 50% rise in its valuation beyond an undisclosed baseline.
The fund is intended to enable significant donations to traditional nonprofit organisations or provide direct support to specific communities affected by AI advances. The company highlighted its commitment against a backdrop of growing public concern around AI’s potential to disrupt labor markets, affect social behaviors, and contribute to environmental challenges.
"AI may generate enormous economic value, but it could also cause instability for many workers," Anthropic stated in a company blog post. While the firm has already pledged $200 million towards mitigating these risks, it acknowledged that the accelerating pace of AI development may require more ambitious interventions, which the flexible fund structure is designed to support.
Founded in 2021 by seven former OpenAI employees, Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation, requiring its leadership to balance financial returns with societal interests. The company, preparing for its initial public offering scheduled for November, was valued at $965 billion during a funding round in May that raised $65 billion. Reports suggest the company may seek a $1.5 trillion valuation when it lists publicly.
Anthropic has also warned that some of its AI models could soon develop self-replicating capabilities, enabling them to embed themselves onto internet-connected devices such as smart refrigerators and robotic vacuum cleaners. This development could lead to AI systems sustaining their operations independently of traditional datacenters.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, reacted to Anthropic’s announcement on social media by committing to distribute some of his own shares directly to the public. Musk said he planned to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, describing it as “the first of many” such actions. SpaceX shares, which are traded on the Nasdaq, saw a 1% rise in pre-market trading on Monday, although they have declined roughly 9% since their debut in June.
Separately, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and a competitor of Anthropic, has reportedly considered granting the U.S. government a 5% equity stake in its organisation.
Anthropic and OpenAI have both called for a deceleration of rapid AI development to ensure safe and responsible progress amid rising public scrutiny.
