WARREN, Mich. — The rapid expansion of data center construction in the United States is reshaping the labor market for skilled trades, particularly electricians, as technology companies invest heavily in facilities to support artificial intelligence operations. OpenAI’s new data center project in Saline Township, Michigan, represents the largest single investment in the state’s history and is drawing hundreds of electricians to work extended hours on-site.
Tyler Shelton, a 29-year-old apprentice electrician in Detroit, described the shift firsthand. While much of his time is typically spent on traditional electrical work such as maintaining cables underground, many of his colleagues have already been recruited by data center projects, which offer higher wages and substantial overtime. Despite the financial incentives, Shelton expressed ambivalence about the demanding work schedule, emphasizing a desire to balance income with personal life.
Apprenticeship programs like the Detroit Electrical Industry Training Center, where approximately 850 trainees currently study, have become central to meeting the surging demand for skilled labor. This surge is largely driven by the needs of tech firms investing in data centers to accommodate explosive growth in AI technologies. These companies are partnering with unions and contractors to expand training pipelines. For example, Google has committed $50 million to increase apprenticeship enrollment from 19,500 to 30,000 annually over the next three years in designated locations, while BlackRock has launched a $100 million program to expand skilled trade training aligned with its Texas data centers.
The data center boom stands in contrast to stagnant or declining sectors such as office construction, which remains subdued post-pandemic, and housing, hindered by high interest rates. Experts warn that intense competition for labor, land, and materials could strain other construction markets.
According to an analysis by the job site Indeed, jobs related to data center installation and maintenance pay 42% more on average than comparable positions in other fields. Contractors must often navigate bidding wars for workers, especially in rural areas where many data centers are located. Staffing firms like Aerotek have become key players in fulfilling labor needs amid this competition.
Tech companies have increasingly become involved in direct workforce development. Meta, for instance, allocated $115 million for a multiyear training initiative to prepare about 5,000 construction workers through a four-week course with travel and lodging support, followed by placements on Meta-related projects. This program, run in part by the Associated Builders and Contractors—a nonunion trade group—seeks to maintain project timelines and budgets by rapidly upskilling workers.
Conversely, unions emphasize the depth and breadth of skills imparted through longer apprenticeship programs. Sean McGarvey, president of North America’s Building Trades Unions, highlighted that his organization could supply the required workforce if AI companies commit to hiring union labor. OpenAI has pledged to work with unions on staffing since March, a move McGarvey welcomed. He was more critical of short-term training models, calling Meta’s program “a brilliant public relations move” but insufficient compared to traditional four-year apprenticeships.
Local union leaders also point to the political advantages of union involvement. Anthony Abrantes of the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters noted that unions tend to endorse projects where their members are engaged, which can help buffer against community opposition—a challenge that has hindered offshore wind development in some regions.
Within the trades, opinions on data center work are mixed. Apprentice electrician Starr Sciortino, currently working on a General Motors plant retrofit, compared data centers to “weapons factories,” questioning whether the financial benefits justify the environmental and community impacts. As data center construction intensifies, many apprentices face decisions about dedicating their careers to this sector or pursuing opportunities in other industries such as nuclear energy or pharmaceuticals.
While the scale of the ongoing build-out is unprecedented, questions remain about its long-term implications for workers and communities involved.
