An AI-generated version of actor Michael Caine’s voice narrates a new audio book adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey,” released Tuesday. The 13-hour production, created by ElevenLabs, showcases an artificial intelligence model replicating the voice of the 93-year-old British actor, known for roles in films such as “The Italian Job” and “Get Carter.” The project also features additional voices sourced from ElevenLabs’ extensive voice library, with performers receiving compensation each time their voices are utilized.
Caine, who lent his digital voice to the production, highlighted the enduring appeal of the ancient narrative in a statement. He described “The Odyssey” as a timeless story exploring themes of perseverance, loyalty, temptation, and the longing for home, which continue to resonate across cultures. He emphasized that the audiobook marries classical storytelling with modern digital technology, brought to life through ElevenLabs’ audiobook platform, ElevenReader. This app counts American actor Matthew McConaughey among its investors.
The use of AI to recreate a recognizable actor’s voice has sparked debate within the entertainment industry. Some actors and creators express concern about the potential for technology to replace human talent. In response, ElevenLabs emphasized that the audiobook aims to enhance the listener’s experience. The company pointed out that “The Odyssey” was originally intended to be performed aloud rather than read silently and that their adaptation features full-cast performances, original music, and cinematic sound design to honor that tradition.
This audiobook release precedes the upcoming premiere of Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of “The Odyssey,” set to debut in late July. Nolan previously worked with Caine on films including “Inception” and “Interstellar.” The movie stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the hero who embarks on a perilous journey to return home to his wife Penelope, portrayed by Anne Hathaway. The cast also includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Travis Scott, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o in the role of Helen of Troy. The film is anticipated to be a major cinematic event in 2026.
