A coalition of artificial intelligence industry leaders has issued a rare and urgent warning about the imminent threat of AI-driven cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure worldwide. The group, which includes OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Oracle, as well as cybersecurity firms Akamai Technologies and Snyk, expressed concern that such attacks could occur within months, representing an escalation both in scale and sophistication.
The open letter highlights the unprecedented speed at which AI technologies are now being leveraged to identify vulnerabilities in software systems. Boaz Gelbord, chief security officer at Akamai, acknowledged the seriousness of the threat while cautioning that some immediate media coverage might be exaggerated. However, he noted that recent developments in cyberattacks driven by AI represent a notable shift in both speed and complexity that he has not observed in his 25 years in the cybersecurity field.
Manoj Nair, chief technology officer at Snyk, explained that AI tools are accelerating the discovery of software flaws in ways that were previously infrequent. “In the past, these used to happen once a year, twice a year,” Nair said, describing how AI-powered tools now uncover critical vulnerabilities multiple times per week. This increased frequency raises concerns about the ability of malign actors to exploit such flaws rapidly.
The emergence of multiple freely accessible AI models, including several developed in China, has lowered the barrier to entry for cybercriminals. These open models nearly match the capabilities of industry leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic and continue to improve on a weekly basis. As a consequence, Nair warned that cyberattack capabilities will soon become more widespread, enabling a broader range of individuals to launch sophisticated AI-driven attacks against vital systems.
The coalition’s warning underscores the urgency of enhancing cybersecurity defenses and preparedness as AI continues to reshape the threat landscape.
