Rene Haas, chief executive of the UK-based chip designer Arm Holdings, has expressed confidence that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to a cure for cancer within our lifetime. Speaking to the BBC, Haas acknowledged that modelling the impact of DNA markers on cancer is currently too complex for both humans and existing AI systems but suggested that advances in computing power and data integration will enable breakthroughs in the near future.

"AI is going to find a cure for cancer that today you and I, other humans couldn't in our lifetimes," Haas said. He explained that as AI models become more sophisticated and more data is fed into them, computers will be able to unravel the complexities of cancer biology. This perspective aligns with ongoing efforts to apply AI tools in cancer research and diagnostics. For instance, the NHS recently reported that AI-powered X-ray analysis has accelerated lung cancer diagnoses for over four million patients.

Beyond healthcare, Haas also highlighted AI’s potential to revolutionize robotics. He forecast that within five years, humanoid robots equipped with AI could become commonplace, capable of learning and adapting to perform a variety of tasks in service industries. However, he noted that current shortages in semiconductor chips are limiting faster development and deployment in this area.

Founded and headquartered in Cambridge, Arm Holdings is a significant player in the global technology sector, with around 7,000 employees worldwide and a valuation of approximately $269 billion. Its chip designs are widely used by major companies including Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Nvidia. Haas joined Arm in 2013 and became CEO in 2022. In addition to his role at Arm, he was recently appointed chief executive of SoftBank’s international business, which has substantial investments in AI companies including OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. Earlier this year, Haas stepped down from the board of pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca.

Arm has proposed a compensation scheme for Haas that could see him become a billionaire if the company achieves ambitious goals to grow into a trillion-dollar business. The company's trajectory reflects the broader intersections of AI, healthcare, and advanced chip technology shaping the future of multiple industries.
