Authorities in the United Kingdom are investigating the Al-Khair Foundation, a UK-based Muslim faith charity, over alleged links to the Palestinian group Hamas following the arrest of Mohammad Yousef Hasna. Hasna, a 45-year-old man from Istanbul, Turkey, was detained in the UK last week on charges related to conspiring to funnel money and supplies to Hamas. He is currently being held pending extradition to New York, where he faces charges brought by U.S. authorities.

The Charity Commission, the UK’s regulatory body for charities, confirmed it launched an inquiry into the Al-Khair Foundation after receiving a complaint last month alleging connections between the charity, its partners, and Hamas, which is designated as a proscribed terrorist organization in the UK. The complaint also claimed that the charity had provided funding to Hamas. The watchdog described the concerns as “serious” and has escalated its review to a statutory inquiry to assess the allegations.

The Al-Khair Foundation, which reported an income exceeding £74 million in its financial year ending July 31, 2025, stated that it is cooperating fully with the investigation. The charity emphasized that Hasna is not an employee but works with one of its global partners responsible for delivering aid worldwide. It also said it had submitted a serious incident report to the Charity Commission prior to the inquiry being initiated.

Legal representatives in New York have alleged that Hasna maintained close ties with Hamas leadership, facilitating the transfer of supplies, food, and funding under the appearance of humanitarian aid. The allegations suggest that aid intended for civilians may have been diverted to support Hamas’s activities.

The investigation comes amid heightened scrutiny of charitable organizations operating in conflict-sensitive regions, seeking to ensure funds and resources are not misappropriated for extremist purposes. The Al-Khair Foundation provides emergency relief and developmental support globally, and the inquiry will examine the full extent of its activities and partnerships.

As the extradition process unfolds, UK authorities continue their inquiry while U.S. officials prepare to prosecute Hasna on charges related to material support for terrorism. The case underscores ongoing challenges in monitoring charitable aid networks and verifying that assistance reaches intended recipients without inadvertently financing designated groups.
