Trainer Aidan O’Brien is set to bring the unbeaten colt Great Barrier Reef back to the track in the Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh this afternoon. The Group 3 race, scheduled for 3:03 p.m., marks the colt’s first outing since a decisive victory in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot earlier this season.

Great Barrier Reef was rested over the summer following three consecutive races in the early part of the season. O’Brien confirmed that the break had been planned to preserve the colt’s form for key autumn contests. “Given he’d had three quite quick runs early in the season, the plan was always to give him a break through the summer and bring him back for the big races in the autumn,” O’Brien said.

Today’s race is intended to serve as a stepping stone toward the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket next month, a race that O’Brien has targeted for Great Barrier Reef. He added that the gap between runs had been a consideration in scheduling this reappearance, describing the Round Tower Stakes as an ideal starting point for the colt’s return.

Great Barrier Reef’s undefeated record so far has heightened expectations for his continued development this autumn campaign. The Curragh race will offer an early indication of his readiness to compete at the highest level before stepping up to Group 1 competition at Newmarket.
