Daveigh Chase, the actress best known for her roles in "Lilo & Stitch" and "The Ring," died on June 16 at a hospital in Los Angeles. She was 35 years old. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed on Monday that her cause of death was complications related to AIDS. The report also cited chronic polysubstance use as a contributing factor.
Chase’s estranged father, John Schwallier, said he was not surprised by the diagnosis, attributing it to the difficult circumstances she faced while living as an addict on Los Angeles’ Skid Row for more than a decade. “It’s something you sometimes have to expect with the lifestyle she was living,” Schwallier said.
Schwallier indicated that he had been out of contact with Chase in person since she was about six years old, though they maintained phone communication during her childhood. After her passing, Chase’s remains were entrusted to her mother, Cathy.
Chase gained fame as a child actress, notably voicing the title character in the 2002 Disney animated film "Lilo & Stitch" and appearing in the 2002 horror film "The Ring." Despite early success, her later years were reportedly marked by struggles with substance abuse.
Authorities have not released additional details about her death.
