Zone 4, between 80 and 90 percent, is characterized by strenuous activity near one’s limit and is typically associated with high-intensity interval training. Finally, Zone 5, at 90 to 100 percent of MHR, requires maximum effort, such as sprinting, and leads to rapid fatigue.
Emerging research highlights the advantages of training primarily in Zone 2 for both health and fitness. This level supports aerobic endurance by using fat as the main fuel source, preserving glycogen stores and allowing for longer duration workouts without excessive fatigue. Many elite endurance athletes spend a majority of their training time in this zone, supplementing it with shorter, high-intensity sessions.
Health guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise weekly, a target that aligns closely with Zone 2 activity. Because the effort is manageable and sustainable, individuals can engage in Zone 2 exercise daily without requiring extensive recovery, making it an accessible and effective way to improve cardiovascular fitness.
