Airbnb has introduced new rules that eliminate the requirement for guests to perform extensive housekeeping tasks upon checkout. The policy, effective for reservations booked on or after November 20, prohibits hosts from mandating chores such as stripping beds, washing dishes, disposing of trash off-site, or any duties typically expected of professional cleaners. Hosts are also no longer allowed to impose restrictions on the use of amenities or charge excessive fees related to their use, although some exceptions apply.
The move aims to simplify checkout procedures and reduce friction caused by unclear or burdensome house rules. In a company statement, Airbnb emphasized that the updated guidelines are intended to make checkout requests reasonable and straightforward, helping to resolve longstanding guest complaints about hidden fees and complicated departure instructions.
This change comes after years of frustration from guests who have reported onerous checkout demands. For instance, a widely circulated example involved a multi-page checklist requiring guests to return game pieces to their original places and store remotes properly, with fines imposed for noncompliance. Such detailed rules have often been difficult for guests to navigate and have contributed to a negative rental experience.
Nick Ewen, editor in chief at the Points Guy, recounted his own challenges during an eight-night stay in Vancouver, where he was required to sort and recycle garbage using differently labeled bins located in a locked room accessible only by elevator. He described the process as confusing and had to contact the property owners multiple times for instructions. Under the new regulations, guests like Ewen will no longer need to undertake such tasks and can simply leave trash by the door.
By streamlining expectations and prohibiting unreasonable charges or chores, Airbnb intends to create a more consistent and user-friendly experience for both guests and hosts. The changes reflect the company’s response to widespread feedback and effort to improve customer satisfaction in its global community.
