A consortium led by Airbus has put forward a proposal to establish a German-led alliance aimed at developing a next-generation fighter jet. The initiative, known as Team Gen 6, emerges in the wake of the dissolution of the €100 billion Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project, which was a joint Franco-German endeavour.
The FCAS program, intended to deliver an advanced combat aircraft and related technologies, collapsed amid disputes between Airbus and Dassault Aviation over intellectual property rights and disagreements regarding the aircraft’s design. These disagreements stalled progress and eventually led to the project's termination.
Team Gen 6 seeks to revive efforts for a next-generation fighter by fostering closer cooperation within a German-led framework. Although detailed plans for the project have yet to be disclosed, the alliance is comprised of several defence firms with Airbus at the forefront, signalling a shift in leadership from the previous Franco-German model.
The proposal reflects ongoing tensions and differing priorities between French and German aerospace industries, which have historically collaborated on defence projects but also grappled with balancing national interests and industrial competition.
While Airbus and Team Gen 6 emphasize the need for a unified approach under German leadership to advance Europe’s air combat capabilities, French stakeholders have expressed concerns about the shift away from a joint European partnership and the implications for national sovereignty in defence technology development.
The development of next-generation fighter jets remains a critical strategic priority for European powers aiming to maintain technological edge and operational readiness amid evolving security challenges. The outcome of this latest initiative will influence the trajectory of Europe’s military aviation industry and its ability to deliver cutting-edge combat aircraft for future defence needs.
