China Eastern Airlines has reported a male passenger to police following an incident onboard a domestic flight during which a flight attendant was filmed kneeling in the aisle to apologize for accidentally bumping the passenger’s elbow with a service trolley. The event took place on a flight from Hefei, Anhui province, to Dalian, Liaoning province earlier this week.
According to the airline’s statements, the cabin crew member accidentally nudged the passenger, who was asleep at the time, while serving drinks. The attendant immediately and repeatedly apologized, but the passenger responded with aggressive behavior, including the use of vulgar language and threats. China Eastern said the man demanded that the attendant accompany him to a hospital after landing.
The airline described the passenger’s conduct as a serious disruption of order on a civil aircraft, asserting that it severely infringed on the personal dignity of the employee. Following the incident, China Eastern has barred the individual from flying with the carrier and has formally reported the matter to public security authorities.
Medical personnel examined the passenger upon landing and confirmed that the injury did not warrant further treatment. The flight attendant, who received post-incident support from the airline, has since returned to work.
The incident has sparked wider discussion about the pressures faced by cabin crew, especially in relation to complaint-driven performance evaluations. Airlines often consider complaint rates a critical operational metric, as do international rating organizations like Skytrax when assessing carriers’ service quality. This dynamic can place significant strain on flight attendants as they navigate both passenger interactions and company standards.
