Heathrow Airport has advised passengers to review new regulations regarding the carriage of battery-powered devices before traveling, amid a busy summer travel period across the UK. With approximately 30 million British holidaymakers expected to fly in July and August, including more than 23 million at Heathrow alone, the airport has highlighted updated rules on power banks, lithium cells, and batteries that came into effect earlier this year.
The changes follow guidance from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which revised protocols on how passengers can bring battery-powered items onboard aircraft. Heathrow emphasized the importance of passengers checking specific airline policies, as rules on carrying batteries vary and can impact what is permitted in both checked and hand luggage.
Most airlines now limit passengers to a maximum of two power banks, which must be carried in hand luggage and kept within reach during the flight. The use of these batteries while onboard is generally prohibited. This restriction also applies to devices such as e-cigarettes and spare batteries. However, some airlines adopt different limits, allowing either fewer or more units than the standard two, making it critical for travelers to verify each airline’s requirements in advance.
The airport encouraged passengers to prepare ahead by checking in electronically and downloading boarding passes before arriving at the terminal. This advice aims to expedite the travel experience and ensure compliance with the updated battery regulations.
These new safety measures were introduced to address concerns over the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries during flights, which can be a fire hazard if damaged, improperly stored, or mishandled. By requiring batteries to be carried in the cabin rather than checked baggage, airlines and regulators aim to improve the ability to respond swiftly to any incidents involving these power sources.
