Shares of African digital financial services company Airtel Money opened modestly higher in their debut on the London Stock Exchange, though the firm’s valuation fell short of initial expectations. Trading commenced at $2.65 per share, marking a 2 percent increase from the offering price of £1.96 per share.
Airtel Money, also known as Airtel Mobile Commerce, offered 270 million shares representing 10 percent of its share capital, raising approximately £529 million ($7 billion). Existing shareholders sold the stake as part of the listing. The company had originally aimed for a valuation between $8 billion and $9 billion, according to a source familiar with the transaction.
The firm reported earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) of $676 million for the fiscal year ending in March. Airtel Money currently serves 53 million monthly active users across 13 markets in sub-Saharan Africa, where conventional banking infrastructure remains limited.
The listing represents a positive development for the London Stock Exchange amid a period marked by fewer initial public offerings and a wave of takeovers and delistings, which have resulted in the departure of several established companies from the market.
Airtel Money’s public debut highlights growing investor interest in financial technology businesses focused on expanding digital payment solutions in emerging markets, particularly in regions with underdeveloped traditional finance systems.
