San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk remains in a state of uncertainty as the team commenced training camp on Saturday. Aiyuk, who is still under contract with the 49ers, has not appeared with the active roster due to his placement on the reserve/left squad list late last season. This designation prevents him from signing with another team unless he applies for reinstatement through the league.

49ers general manager John Lynch declined to elaborate on Aiyuk’s situation during a Saturday press conference, stating that the organization intends to focus on the players currently with the team. “Brandon is on a ‘left squad’ designation. As such, he’s not on our 90-man roster,” Lynch said. “I’m, personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players that are here. And so, I don’t have anything to say on that, anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well.”

Aiyuk’s troubled relationship with the 49ers has been marked by a series of clashes over the past year. The team placed him on the reserve/left squad list after revoking $27 million in contract guarantees for the 2026 season due to his failure to participate in team meetings and activities. His absence last season followed a lengthy holdout during the offseason, which delayed his signing of a four-year, $120 million contract extension ahead of the 2024 season.

The receiver, who was initially drafted in the first round in 2020, posted strong numbers early in his career, including a 2023 campaign with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, earning him second-team All-Pro honors. However, his 2024 season was marred by injury and limited production, totaling 25 catches for 374 yards in seven games before sidelining.

In addition to his off-field disputes, Aiyuk has publicly expressed a desire to join the Washington Commanders, specifically to reunite with his former college quarterback Jayden Daniels. Despite these public comments and his clear interest in a trade or release, the 49ers have maintained their current stance, holding his rights until he formally requests reinstatement from the NFL, which would allow for potential roster moves.

Aiyuk’s ongoing status leaves both him and the 49ers facing an uncertain path forward as the team continues preparations for the upcoming season.
