Feras Al-Brikan scored a stoppage-time equalizer to secure a 1-1 draw for Al-Ahli against Uzbekistan’s Pakhtakor in the opening match of the Asian Champions League Elite on Monday. The fixture took place at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.
Al-Ahli, the reigning champions who claimed their second consecutive continental title in April, fell behind late in the game after Flamarion struck in the 86th minute. However, Al-Brikan’s goal in the final moments ensured the Saudi Pro League club salvaged a point in their tournament opener.
This match marked Al-Ahli’s first appearance in the competition under new head coach Marino Pusic. Pusic took over following the departure of Matthias Jaissle in August, who left the club to succeed Eddie Howe as Newcastle’s manager.
The Asian Champions League Elite has expanded from 24 to 32 teams this season, with a record five Saudi clubs participating in the league phase. Among them, Al-Ittihad also earned a late 1-1 draw against Qatar’s Al-Shamal. Georginio Wijnaldum scored in the final moments to cancel out Baghdad Bounedjah’s goal from the 63rd minute.
Elsewhere, Al-Qadsiah, managed by Brendan Rodgers, started their campaign strongly with a 2-1 victory over Al-Wasl of the United Arab Emirates. Two quick goals from Julian Quinones and Mateo Retegui in the second half secured the win for the Saudi side.
The expanded format and strong representation by Saudi clubs reflect the growing significance of the competition and the region’s increasing influence in Asian club football.
