Al Sadd face a challenging encounter against Al Shamal in the Doha Bank Stars League (DBSL) on Friday, while league leaders Al Rayyan aim to maintain their unbeaten start in a match against Al Arabi on Saturday.
The clash between defending champions Al Sadd and last season’s runners-up Al Shamal takes place at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, with both teams eager to regain momentum after differing outcomes in the AFC Champions League Elite. Al Sadd returned to domestic league action with a 4-0 victory over Al Shahania last week, following two consecutive defeats. The win keeps the reigning champions in second place with 15 points, trailing leaders Al Rayyan by two as they pursue a fourth consecutive league title.
Under head coach Razvan Lucescu, Al Sadd also secured their first point in the continental competition, drawing 1-1 against Saudi Arabia’s Al Qadsiah. Sadd took an early lead in that match but conceded a late equalizer. Lucescu emphasized the importance of preparation in the face of a congested fixture schedule, urging his players to stay focused and deliver a strong performance to secure maximum points.
Al Shamal, coached by David Prats, enter the fixture on the back of an impressive 3-1 victory over Saudi club Al Hilal in the AFC Champions League Elite. However, their domestic form has been less convincing, with the team winless in their last four DBSL matches, which has seen them drop to sixth position on nine points. Prats acknowledged the strength of a side that has dominated the domestic scene over the past two years and noted that his staff has carefully analyzed Al Sadd’s strengths and weaknesses. He expressed hope that his players would carry the confidence gained from their recent continental success into Friday’s league clash.
The following day at Al Thumama Stadium, Al Rayyan will look to extend their unbeaten domestic run when they face Al Arabi, currently fourth in the standings. Al Rayyan, who have not won the league since 2016, currently lead the table by two points over Al Sadd and are determined to preserve their advantage.
Other DBSL matches scheduled for Friday include Al Shahania hosting Al Ahli at Al Khor Stadium at 5:15 p.m., and Al Gharafa facing Qatar SC at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Al Sailiya will play Lusail at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium at 5:15 p.m., while Al Duhail hosts Al Wakrah at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
