Kuwait’s Al-Zour liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facilities play a crucial role in supporting the country’s energy supply, particularly during the summer months when demand for electricity and water peaks, according to officials from the Ministry of Oil. The facilities’ operational capabilities provide the flexibility and reliability needed to maintain continuous fuel supplies to power and water plants, officials said during a panel discussion held on September 2.
Sheikha Tamader Khaled Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Director of Public Relations and Petroleum Media at the Ministry of Oil, emphasized that the Al-Zour facilities integrate multiple functions—from receiving LNG shipments from global markets to regasification and delivery to the consumer network. This integration allows Kuwait to respond effectively to fluctuations in demand, especially during the summer peak season.
“The importance of the Al-Zour facilities stems from their ability to connect LNG imports from international suppliers with the needs of the domestic market,” Sheikha Tamader said. The Ministry of Oil continues to prioritize energy infrastructure projects to meet evolving national requirements and support development objectives.
Officials from Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) also provided detailed insights into the facilities’ operational scope. Abdullah Al-Ajmi, head of the KNPC Gas Group Operations Team, and Salah Behzad, head of the KNPC Operations Department, highlighted the facilities’ strategic role in maintaining steady fuel supplies and enhancing supply system flexibility through access to global LNG markets and strategic reserves.
The Al-Zour facility features eight LNG storage tanks, each with a capacity of 225,000 cubic meters, totaling 1.8 million cubic meters of storage. It can receive up to 22 million tons of LNG annually and supply 3,000 billion British thermal units (BTUs) of natural gas. This capacity enables Kuwait to sustain domestic supply for up to 12 days without incoming shipments under maximum operational conditions.
The LNG import process begins with the arrival of carriers at marine berths, followed by unloading, storage in refrigerated tanks, regasification, and subsequent distribution to electricity and water plants. According to the KNPC officials, these capabilities form a vital link that supports the national gas network, particularly during periods of elevated demand.
Al-Ajmi and Behzad underlined the importance of maintaining fuel supply reliability amidst summer demand surges, noting the facility’s ability to adjust import volumes and manage reserves to absorb market fluctuations. Through 2026, the Al-Zour facilities have received 445 LNG carriers and processed the equivalent of 67 million cubic meters of LNG, delivering roughly 1.263 million standard cubic feet of gas.
Furthermore, they reported environmental improvements, including a reduction of approximately 8,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions through nitrogen gas injection and the implementation of a gas re-liquefaction project.
The panel concluded that the Al-Zour LNG import facilities constitute a foundational component of Kuwait’s energy security framework. By combining operational flexibility, strategic storage, and reliable supplies, the facilities support critical electricity and water infrastructure during periods of peak demand.
