Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from this year’s Wimbledon Championships due to a persistent wrist injury, the Spanish tennis star confirmed on his official social media account. The 23-year-old, a two-time Wimbledon champion in 2023 and 2024, has cited concerns over his recovery as the primary reason for missing the prestigious grass-court event.
Alcaraz’s injury has been an ongoing issue since last month, when he reportedly sustained it during a match at the Barcelona Open. Initial assessments underestimated the severity, but subsequent medical evaluations revealed that the problem was more serious than initially believed. The injury had already forced the world number one to pull out of the French Open earlier this year.
In his statement, Alcaraz expressed regret over missing Wimbledon and the Queen’s Club Championships, two tournaments he described as special. He said he is making progress in his recovery but is not yet ready to compete. “My recovery is going well and I feel much better, but unfortunately I’m still not ready to be able to play, and that’s why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen’s and Wimbledon,” he wrote.
The decision follows Alcaraz’s strong start to the season, highlighted by his victory over Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open. The win completed his career Grand Slam, making him the youngest man at age 22 to achieve the feat, having previously secured multiple titles at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
Despite the setback, Alcaraz has emphasized the importance of a cautious rehabilitation process. Earlier this year, he said he was unwilling to risk long-term damage by rushing back to competition, noting his commitment to a sustained career in the sport. “I have a very long career ahead of me, with many years still to come. Forcing things could really harm me for future tournaments,” he remarked.
Alcaraz’s absence removes one of the top contenders from this year’s Wimbledon field, where organizers will now adjust seedings and expectations with the defending champion sidelined.
