Scott Davies marked the start of his tenure as Aldershot Town manager with a narrow 1-0 victory over Boston United at York Street on Saturday. Naming a starting lineup composed entirely of debutants, Davies’ new-look squad secured the win through a 59th-minute strike by John Gilbert.

The match began with Boston United applying early pressure, most notably through Tom Cursons, whose attempt just missed the target after a well-placed pass from Jamie Grimes opened space on the right flank. Despite initial difficulties, Aldershot gradually settled into the game, with Davies praising his team’s collective effort and resilience after a slow start. “The first 20 minutes we looked like rabbits in the headlights but then we settled into the game, believed we were good enough to be out there,” Davies noted. He also expressed some frustration regarding the quality of service to his wingers but praised the quality of the goal his side created once the ball reached wide areas.

Boston maintained their attacking intent following halftime, continuing to press Aldershot’s defense. Early in the second half, a free kick delivered by Jack Holmes was met by Cursons but was saved by Aldershot goalkeeper Nick Hayes. Despite Boston’s dominance in possession, Aldershot’s counterattacks posed significant threats, especially through Basil Tuma and Hakeem Sandah. The decisive moment came in the 59th minute when Tuma advanced down the left flank, passing to Marcus Dinanga, whose flick-on found Gilbert. The forward executed a powerful finish into the top corner, giving Aldershot the lead.

Boston pressed for an equalizer late in the match with Lenell John-Lewis among the substitutes introduced by manager Paul Hurst. John-Lewis struck from close range in the final minutes but was denied by a crucial save from Hayes. Boston’s frustration increased when Jake Rooney received a second yellow card near the end for a foul on the halfway line, reducing the home side to ten men in stoppage time.

Davies highlighted the team’s defensive commitment as a key factor in their victory.
