Alejandro Garnacho has expressed regret over his departure from Manchester United, acknowledging that his behavior during his final months at the club was not ideal. The 21-year-old winger transferred to Chelsea last summer in a deal reportedly worth £40 million, after falling out of favor under Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim and failing to secure a place in the first-team squad during pre-season.
Garnacho, who joined Manchester United from Spain’s youth ranks and progressed through their academy for several years, described his time at the club as an important period in his career. However, he admitted that in the months leading up to his exit, his playing time diminished and his frustration grew. “In the last six months I was just not playing like before at United. I started to be on the bench,” Garnacho said, reflecting on his mindset at the time. “In my mind it was like I had to play every game. In my mind, maybe it is also on me, I started to do some bad things.”
The situation surrounding his departure was marked by several controversial moments. Garnacho was photographed wearing an Aston Villa shirt emblazoned with the name of Marcus Rashford, a former Manchester United teammate who had gone on loan to Aston Villa after falling out of favor with Amorim. Additionally, supporters noted that Garnacho was often left on the bench, including during the second half of the Europa League final, a situation his brother publicly criticized, suggesting that the player had been “thrown under the bus” by the manager.
Despite these tensions, Garnacho emphasized his affection for Manchester United. “I loved that club. They gave me the confidence from the start,” he stated. “From Spain, to bring me to the academy, then they bring me to the first team. So it was like four or five years, and amazing love from everyone.” He added that the fans and stadium left him with only fond memories, underscoring his appreciation for the club’s support throughout his time there.
Since his move to Chelsea, Garnacho has sought a fresh start and the opportunity to re-establish himself at the Premier League club, aiming to build on the potential he demonstrated during his early years at Manchester United.
