Australian Alex de Minaur advanced to the final of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Saturday by defeating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a closely contested semifinal match. De Minaur overcame the fifth-seeded Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a match that tested both players’ resilience.
Zverev, who was aiming to secure his third title of 2026, was denied a celebratory victory ahead of officially becoming the world No. 1. With rankings due to be updated on Monday, Zverev will surpass Italy’s Jannik Sinner to claim the top spot. Despite the loss, the German secured a milestone in his career by reaching this new peak in the ATP rankings.
The decisive set in Vienna was marked by strong holds of serve, with neither player able to break through. De Minaur capitalized in the tiebreaker, claiming the match on his third match point by winning two of Zverev’s service points. Over the course of the match, de Minaur generated 14 break point opportunities but converted only one, compared with three break points for Zverev, who was unable to take advantage.
With the victory, de Minaur jumped past Spain’s Rafael Nadal into the top eight in the ATP Race to qualify for the forthcoming ATP Finals. In the final, he will face second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, who secured his spot by defeating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Alcaraz holds a 6-0 head-to-head advantage over de Minaur, adding intrigue to the championship match.
At the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot reached his first ATP 500 final by overcoming American Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. After trailing in the first-set tiebreaker 4-1, Vacherot rallied to break Fritz’s serve at 6-5 and seize the set. He then pressured Fritz’s serve in the eighth game of the second set, securing a break and closing out the match in the following game.
Vacherot will face Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the final. Lehecka prevailed over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, benefiting from a strong service performance, winning 23 of 27 points on serve and breaking Struff early in the deciding set. Both finalists at the Swiss Indoors are pursuing their first title of the 2026 season and have evenly split their two previous encounters.
