Alex Ovechkin has committed to return for his 22nd season with the Washington Capitals, signing a one-year contract that signals another chapter in an illustrious NHL career. The Capitals announced the veteran forward’s deal on Thursday, confirming Ovechkin’s continued presence as the team aims to build on recent roster upgrades.
Last season, Ovechkin contributed 32 goals and totaled 64 points, maintaining his reputation as a consistent offensive threat. This offseason, Washington added depth to its scoring lineup through trades for Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, as well as signings of Boone Jenner and Vincent Desharnais. Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan emphasized the significance of Ovechkin’s return, noting that the veteran star provides coach Spencer Carbery with additional offensive flexibility on any given night.
Ovechkin’s contract carries a base salary of $1 million and a signing bonus of $3.25 million, resulting in a $4.25 million salary cap hit for the upcoming season. Additionally, a $4.75 million performance bonus is available after Ovechkin plays 10 games, which may be deferred to the Capitals’ 2027-28 salary cap if necessary. MacLellan had anticipated the structure of Ovechkin’s deal, allowing the team to pursue multiple roster enhancements while preserving cap space.
Despite signing for another season at age 41, Ovechkin remained noncommittal about his long-term future and whether this season will mark his NHL swan song. “I’m going to be 41 years old,” Ovechkin said. “I have lots of pressure on my shoulders through all the years. I’m not going to think about it and just going to focus on the game and how to help my team to win.” The forward also appeared unfazed by the recurring speculation regarding his potential retirement and the likely “retirement tour” narrative as the Capitals travel across the league.
Ovechkin expressed optimism about the team’s outlook heading into the new season. Speaking from Turkey, where he was vacationing with his family, he highlighted the club’s strong roster and reiterated the collective aspiration: first to reach the playoffs and then to compete for the Stanley Cup. He declined to detail discussions with Carbery and MacLellan about his role for the upcoming campaign, though his leadership and scoring ability are expected to remain central to Washington’s offensive strategies.
The Capitals, bolstered by their offseason acquisitions and Ovechkin’s return, aim to advance deeper into the postseason. As one of the NHL’s all-time greatest goal scorers, Ovechkin’s continued commitment provides both a symbolic and practical boost for the franchise’s Stanley Cup ambitions.
