Former NHL goaltender Dominik Hasek has publicly criticized Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin for his vocal support of Russian President Vladimir Putin amid Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Hasek’s remarks come as Ovechkin continues to appear in pro-Putin political videos and express support for Russia, despite stating that he is "not pro-war."

Hasek argues that Ovechkin’s public endorsements serve as a form of propaganda that indirectly promotes Russia’s military actions, which have led to significant violence and humanitarian suffering in Ukraine. He emphasized that while individuals may hold private opinions, Ovechkin’s highly visible status transforms him into a symbol amplifying Russia’s imperialist agenda.

The former goaltender went further to suggest that the National Hockey League (NHL), by allowing Ovechkin to continue playing, is complicit in advancing Russia’s interests. He described this as a serious moral and political issue, urging both the league and lawmakers in the United States and Canada to implement measures to prevent Russian citizens who support Putin from disseminating war propaganda within North American borders.

Hasek also reminded fans that supporting Ovechkin on the ice may unintentionally bolster Russia’s war efforts, effectively contributing to ongoing loss of life in Ukraine. He called on the NHL to weigh broader human consequences against considerations tied to sports entertainment and individual athlete careers in making decisions related to Ovechkin’s participation.
